Refuse and Recycling Services

  • Wednesday 25 March  - Ōtorohanga kerbside collection will go ahead as  normal
  • From Thursday 26 March 2020 kerbside collections will continue for Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia on normal collection days but will be restricted to refuse only (yellow prepaid Rubbish bags).  There will be no recycling collected.   If you put recycling out it will not be sorted and will go to landfill, please clean and store your recycling until further notice. 
  • Street litter bins will continue to be monitored and emptied
  • Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia Recycling centres will be closed from 4pm Wednesday 25 March until further notice
  • Rural Recycling centres will be closed effectively immediately  - these will not be emptied, please do not continue to use them.

Public Toilets

Our cleaning regimes will change and while we will maintain toilets to the highest cleanliest standard we can, we remind people that they are high-risk areas and should only be used if absolutely necessary.


  • Jervios Street Toilets, Kāwhia
  • Wahanui Toilets, Ōtorohanga


All other public toilets will be closed from Wednesday 4pm on 25 March 2020 



We recognise that we cannot physically close all the locations, but people are reminded that these high-risk areas are not included in the Government’s guidance as acceptable outdoor exercise areas during the lock down.

  • Jim Barker Memorial Playground, including cycle path and youth zone
  • Reg Brett skate park & basketball court
  • Windsor Park playground
  • Kāwhia playground and skate park
  • Aotea playground


Council owned recreational green spaces and walkways will remain open however please be responsible when using these areas and maintain your isolation protocols. (e.g. Stop bank pathway, Ōtorohanga Domain, Island Reserve, Bob Horsfall and Rotary Park, Aotea foreshore, Omimiti Park)

Lawn mowing and Gardening


Council lawns and gardens will no longer be maintained until further notice as these are non-essential services.

Noise Complaints

The Government has advised that Noise Control patrols are not an essential service while the nation is in Level 4 of the Covid19 response.

Ōtorohanga District Council will not be responding to noise complaints during this lockdown period.

Water Services

Water and wastewater services will continue as per normal however if you have any urgent issues please call Ricardo Tubilla on 07 873 4376



No physical works will be carried out on the road while level 4 is activated however if there is a safety issue please let us know via email, Facebook or Report an Issue

Council / Board Meetings

There will be no planned meetings and workshops for Councillors and Board Members in the next few weeks. We are working on options for future meetings so that crucial business can still be undertaken.
