Who can join?

Membership of the Ōtorohanga District Library is free to ratepayers and residents of the Ōtorohanga District. If you own a business, work or study locally you will also be eligible for free membership. If you live or pay rates outside these areas, you may join by paying an annual subscription.

How do I join?

You'll need to fill out a membership application form. Library staff need to sight two forms of identification – proof of your address (e.g. bank statement, power account), and proof of your identity (e.g. driver’s licence, passport).

Digital Membership

This option is available if you only wish to access library eBooks/eAudio and electronic subscription databases (Otorohanga residential address required).

Children and Teens

For anyone under 18, we now offer a Youth Independent Card, where you can join the library without the your parents or guarantor signature, but you will be limited to borrowing two books per visit.

Gold Card Membership

This is a membership that entitles you to free borrowing from our “recent release” bestseller fiction collection and from the new magazines collection. If you enjoy reading bestseller fiction, paying an annual Gold Card fee could be the option for you.

What happens after I've joined?

After you’ve joined, you’ll be given a library card. You are responsible for your card, and for all items borrowed on it. You will also be given a PIN that enables you to check your account online via our website.

It is very important that you:

• Don’t let anyone else use your card
• Let us know immediately if you change address or if your card is lost or stolen
• Always bring your card with you when you want to borrow library items

Conditions of Use

• The cardholder is responsible for any items out on the card and any charges that arise as a result of its use 
• Your library card must be produced when borrowing material
• Your library card may not be used by another person except by formal arrangement with the library
• Use of false information is not permitted.The library must be notified of any changes of details (e.g., contact details, eligibility for membership)
• There is a maximum number of items (50) any one member may take out
• Acceptable standards of behaviour are expected towards other library users and staff
• Children must be accompanied by an adult and properly supervised

Privacy

Ōtorohanga District Council is required to comply with the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993. Personal information is collected, held and used in accordance with the principles set out in that Act. In particular, the Council will:

• Use personal information only for the purpose for which it is collected
  • Retain personal information only for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected
  • Release personal information to a third party only when required to or permitted to by law, if you have authorised the release or where disclosure is connected to the purpose for which the information was collected
