Building consent exemptions
Some building projects do not need building consents. This makes it faster and easier for home and building owners to turn their dreams into reality. The full summary of exemptions is available on the building.govt website.
Even though a building consent is not required, there are still rules to follow. All exempt building work must meet the Building Code and other relevant legislation.
Educational resources
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) have exempt building work guidance available on their website.
They have also conducted a series of webinars with key sector stakeholders that discuss the exemptions in further detail. The presentation is available on demand for anybody who wants to learn more.
Lastly, to help homeowners find resources on how they should comply with the Building Code, here are some helpful links to relevant standards.
