What is a rates rebate?
The Rates Rebate Scheme was established by the Department of Internal Affairs in 1973 to provide a subsidy to low-income homeowners on the cost of their rates. If you have a low income and pay the rates on your home, you could be eligible for a rebate or reduction of up to $790 in the 2024/25 financial year.
Rates rebates are administered by local councils on behalf of central government. For 2024/25 the income threshold is $31,510, however if you earn above that amount you may still qualify for a rebate dependent on your circumstances. Paper application forms for the 2024/25 financial year are available from the main office.
