A delegation of Council and staff attended the Poukai at both Aotearoa Pā and Maketū this month. The Poukai were instituted by Kīngi Tāwhiao in response to the destitution his people suffered following the invasion of the Waikato. This kaupapa endures to this day, and strengthens connections to Kīngitanga in support of the pani (bereaved), the pouaru (widowed) and rawakore (destitute). Council further supported this kaupapa and hosted a pop-up stall at Maketū promoting community funding opportunities, road safety and rates remissions. As Council builds genuine partnership relations with Māori across the district, we will continue to attend and support this kaupapa.
