Ōtorohanga’s business owners, Council, and police have come together in a strong show of unity and collaboration to enhance security measures in response to recent burglaries in the township.

At a meeting held at the Ōtorohanga District Council chambers on 20 March, local businesses, police, Elevate and Council discussed how to improve security and support one another.

Mayor Max Baxter praised the teamwork shown at the meeting “Ōtorohanga is strongest when we work together. This meeting showed that we are all committed to making our town safer. It’s not just about reacting to crime but making sure we are do our best to deter it in the future.”

Business owners welcomed the increased security measures “It’s great to see action being taken. Knowing that security patrols are increasing and that the police and Council are listening to us makes a big difference” Grant Matthews, Paper Plus Ōtorohanga.

To help deter crime, First Security will continue conducting random patrols between 6pm and 6am. In collaboration with Elevate, Council is leading an ‘Enhanced Security Project’, focusing on camera investigations. Businesses will be kept informed about this and any other upcoming safety initiatives.

“Our local businesses have shown real strength,” said Nardia Gower, Group Manager of Strategy and Community at Ōtorohanga District Council “We’ll keep working with the police, security teams, Elevate and business owners to make sure safety remains a priority.”

All businesses are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and stay involved in discussions about safety, NZ Police can be contacted on 105 for non-emergency related incidents.
